The Flow of Water Through a Chemical Manufacturing Facility

ACC members are working to advance water stewardship and protect and preserve water sources in the communities where they operate. ACC's Water Stewardship Program supports initiatives to enhance water use at member company facilities, protect water quality in facility communities and the environment, and engage with community members to promote water stewardship activities.

Chemical manufacturing is a water-intensive industry. That's why chemical facilities are undertaking initiatives to identify water-related risks and conserve community water resources. ACC members track and publicly report water consumption data annually through Responsible CareĀ®, the chemical industry's environmental, health, and safety performance initiative. In addition, chemical manufacturers operate under a variety of local, state, and federal permits and regulations regarding water use and treatment.

ACC developed an infographic to illustrate how water is used and managed at a generic chemical manufacturing facility. This infographic highlights key stages such as water intake, its use in cooling systems and steam generation, and treatment of water before it is discharged back into local water bodies.

Learn more about ACC's water stewardship activities and priorities in ACC's Sustainability Report, as well as initiatives individual ACC members are undertaking to advance water quality.
