Southern University advances plans to expand on-campus student housing

Date April 07, 2026

The Southern University Board of Supervisors has taken a step toward expanding student housing at Southern University and A&M College, bringing the institution closer to addressing the growing demand for on-campus living. The project encompasses two new residential buildings, which would add approximately 850 beds to the housing inventory. One building would be dedicated to first- and second-year students, and the other would be more apartment-like residences marketed to upper-class and graduate students.

During its meeting today, the Board approved a resolution granting preliminary approval for student housing financing involving Southern University and A&M College, the Southern University System Foundation, and the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority.

As part of the presentation, the Board reviewed a market analysis and a residential student housing design-build report, both of which underscored the increasing need for additional housing capacity on the Baton Rouge campus.

"This is an important step forward for Southern University and A&M College," said Chancellor John Pierre. "The demand for student housing on our campus continues to grow, and expanding our residential capacity is critical to enhancing the student experience, supporting enrollment growth, and ensuring that our students have access to safe, modern living environments."

The proposed project reflects Southern University's ongoing commitment to improving campus infrastructure and creating spaces that support student success both inside and outside the classroom.

The approval of the resolution allows the University and its partners to proceed with the next phases, which include presentations to the state bond commission and the Louisiana Board of Regents.
