Active Transportation Program – San Rafael Public Works Pursues A New Grant Funding Opportunity

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) released the Call for Projects for Active Transportation Program (ATP) Cycle 8 in March 2026. The ATP is intended to encourage increased use of active transportation modes, such as walking and bicycling.

The City is currently preparing ATP Cycle 8 grant applications for the following projects:

  • South Merrydale Road - Civic Center Connector Pathway Project
  • Manuel T. Freitas Active Transportation Gap Closure Project

If the City receives ATP funding for these projects, it would represent a significant step forward in improving active transportation connections throughout the community. The projects would replace existing pathways and provide safer, more comfortable, and more accessible routes for pedestrians and bicyclists.
