PITTSBURGH, PA - JUNE 5, 2026 - Today, Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (PA-12) celebrated the official ribbon cutting and reopening of the historic Allegheny YMCA on Pittsburgh's North Side, following a major renovation supported by $1 million in Community Project Funding that Rep. Lee secured to help make the landmark facility more accessible, modern, and responsive to community needs.
The federal investment helped support building rehabilitation and community improvements at the Allegheny YMCA, including upgrades to advance ADA accessibility, address aging infrastructure, improve air conditioning and plumbing, and expand the facility's ability to serve seniors, children, residents, families, and neighbors across the North Side.
"For more than a century, the Allegheny YMCA has been part of the story of Pittsburgh's North Side, a place where generations of neighbors have found housing, care, community, and support," said Rep. Summer Lee. "But honoring that history means making sure the people who built this community are not shut out of it. A senior should not have to face a staircase they cannot climb. A disabled neighbor should not be treated like access is optional. Families deserve safe, welcoming spaces for childcare, wellness, housing, and connection. That is why I'm proud we fought to bring this $1 million home. These renovations carry the promise of dignity, access, and belonging for every person who walks through those doors."
Rep. Lee secured the $1 million investment through the Community Project Funding process to support the Allegheny YMCA's rehabilitation and ensure the facility could better serve the North Side for generations to come. The funding was part of Lee's broader effort to direct federal dollars to community-based organizations and historically overlooked neighborhoods across Western Pennsylvania.
"This project makes the building and the programs and services that we offer accessible to everyone. And that's really what it's about. It's not the beautiful walls and the restoration of the building. It's about the people that we're serving through our programs and services," said Amy Haralson Kienle, President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. "That's what inspires us. We would not be here without the extraordinary partnership of ACTION Housing and the many funders and community leaders who believed in this vision. The Allegheny Y has always been a place of belonging, and today it is better equipped than ever to remain one for generations to come."
In December 2023, Rep. Lee hosted a roundtable with Community Project Funding recipients to highlight the need to pass a federal budget and demonstrate what these investments would mean for local organizations and communities.
At the time, Carolyn Grady, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh YMCA, explained how urgent the accessibility needs were at the Allegheny YMCA: "Right now, with all of the stairs and no elevator, we can't host a lot of senior programming. If you have any kind of mobility issues. It's almost impossible to get into the building. The residents who live on the top three floors, we have a chair on each landing so they can sit down and catch their breath as they are carrying their groceries up to their room. There is no air conditioning in that building right now. And if you can imagine everybody remembers what last summer was like with those air quality days. And so, we are deeply grateful for the support from your office, Congresswoman Lee for delivering the funding for this renovation to bring accessibility, updated plumbing, air conditioning, and an affordable childcare center to our resident's and Pittsburgh's North Side."
The reopened Allegheny YMCA marks a new chapter for one of the North Side's most iconic community institutions. With the support of federal funding, the renovation honors the building's legacy while helping create a safer, more accessible, and more welcoming space for residents and community members of all ages and abilities.
Through her Community Project Funding efforts, Rep. Lee has secured direct investments for community-based organizations, including a$1 million CPF award to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, $450,000 to the Trade Institute of Pittsburgh, over $1.5 million in federal support for the Tree of Life rebuilding and healing initiatives, $1 million in Community Project Funding for historic renovations at the Carnegie Library of Homestead, more than $1 million in federal funding to combat blight and revitalize housing in North Braddock, and $1 million to help turn vacant office space into affordable homes, create good-paying jobs, and bring new life to downtown Pittsburgh.
These projects are part of more than $24.9 million in Community Project Funding secured during her time in Congress. Rep. Lee's office has consistently directed federal dollars to historically overlooked communities to ensure equitable access to opportunities and long-term regional growth and stability.
