Iowans Encouraged to ‘Spring Clean’ Their Finances for Financial Literacy Month

In recognition of Financial Literacy Month, State Treasurer Roby Smith is encouraging Iowans to take a proactive approach to their financial well-being by setting aside time for a financial spring cleaning.

"Spring is a time for fresh starts, and that should include your finances," said Treasurer Smith. "Taking a few simple steps now-reviewing your budget, checking your credit and strengthening your savings-can help put you on a more secure financial path for the rest of the year and beyond."

As part of Financial Literacy Month, Treasurer Smith and his team partnered with Iowa Jump$tart to support the State Economics Challenge Finals and the State Personal Finance Challenge. These events highlight the dedication of Iowa students working to build real-world financial skills and a strong understanding of economic principles.

Treasurer Smith emphasizes to every Iowan that even small adjustments can have a meaningful impact over time. As part of Financial Literacy Month, Treasurer Smith is encouraging Iowans to take the following steps:

  • Revisit Your Budget: Evaluate your current income and expenses to ensure your spending aligns with your financial goals.

  • Check Your Credit Report: Regularly reviewing your credit helps protect against identity theft and ensures accuracy.

  • Strengthen Your Savings: Build or replenish your emergency fund and consider long-term savings options, including investing in an ISave 529 account for future education expenses.

  • Search for Unclaimed Property: Visit GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov to see if you have funds waiting to be claimed.

  • Audit Your Subscriptions: The average household has approximately seven subscriptions totaling more than $100 a month. Check to ensure you're using yours properly.

  • Set Clear Financial Goals: Establish achievable short- and long-term goals to stay focused and motivated.
