Winter Weather Preps

A hard freeze is expected the next few days, with a higher chance of winter weather precipitation now expected Monday into Tuesday morning according to local forecasts. It's essential to prepare and stay safe. Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

Protect the Four P's: People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants

  • People: Limit time outdoors. If you must go outside, dress in layers and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite and hypothermia. Check in on neighbors, friends and family, especially the elderly and those with special needs to ensure they are safe and warm.
  • Pets: Bring pets indoors. Ensure they have a warm, dry place with plenty of food and water.
  • Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing. Let faucets drip slowly to maintain water flow. Keep garage doors closed, and open cabinets inside to let warm air circulate (Check out WCID's video on how to protect your pipes or visit Lakeway MUD's Website with some additional tips on how to shut of your water in case of a leak).
  • Plants: Move potted plants indoors. Cover outdoor vegetation to shield them from frost.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Assemble a kit with essentials:

  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Portable chargers
  • First aid supplies
  • Non-perishable food and water
  • Warm clothing and blankets

Heating Safety

  • Ensure fireplaces and wood stoves are in good condition.
  • Never use charcoal grills or portable gas heaters indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
