Sheehy Nominates Montanans for Service Academies

U.S. SENATE - Senator Tim Sheehy nominated four Montana students for admission to a United States Service Academy.

"My wife and I met at the Naval Academy, and we were proud to serve our country, me as a Navy SEAL and Carmen as a Marine. There's no higher calling in life than serving your country, and Carmen and I know how rewarding it is to answer the call and attend a service academy. It is one of my greatest honors to nominate these outstanding young Montanans for appointment to a U.S. Service Academy and to serve as America's next generation of leaders and warfighters," said Senator Sheehy.

Senator Sheehy's Principal Nominees:

  • Logan Brown, Belgrade, attends Gallatin High School, received the Principal Nomination for the U.S. Naval Academy.
  • Elise Daugherty, Gallatin Gateway, attends Lone Peak High School, received the Principal Nomination for the U.S. Air Force Academy.
  • Gavin T. Garrison, Glen, attends Beaverhead County High School, received the Principal Nomination for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
  • Sam Talbot, Bozeman, attends Gallatin High School, received the Principal Nomination for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

In order to gain admission, Montanans must apply directly to the Academy and apply for a Congressional Nomination. These appointments are offered to those who meet the eligibility requirements and are the most competitive in academic performance, physical fitness, extracurricular involvement, leadership traits, motivation, and aptitude for military service. Graduates are obligated to serve in the military for five years following their graduation.

In March, Senator Sheehy was appointed to the United States Naval Academy Board of Visitors by President Donald J. Trump. The duty of the Academy's Board of Visitors is to inquire into the state of morale and discipline, the curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, academic methods, and other matters relating to the academy which the Board decides to consider.

Senator Sheehy has hosted multiple informational sessions with Montana students about leadership, service, and attending a United States Service Academy across the state this year.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy class of 2008 with a B.S. in History, Senator Sheehy completed several deployments and hundreds of missions as a US Navy SEAL Officer and Team Leader, deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, and the Pacific region. Senator Sheehy met his wife, Carmen, who served as a U.S. Marine Corps Officer, at the Naval Academy.
