The Goodyear Police Department has been awarded a $6,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety to support the national Click It or Ticket campaign. This funding will help provide additional officer coverage and overtime enforcement during the high visibility seat belt enforcement period, running May 18 to May 31, 2026, which aligns with the Memorial Day travel season.
The campaign is part of a nationwide effort led by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to increase seat belt use and save lives. Officers will take a zero-tolerance approach to seat belt and child safety seat violations, with a focus on both daytime and nighttime enforcement. NHTSA data show that more unrestrained passenger vehicle fatalities occur at night, and males are less likely to buckle up compared to females.
In 2024, NHTSA reports that 39,345 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in crashes, and nearly 50% were not wearing seat belts. Seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017, and could have saved over 2,500 more if everyone had been buckled up. Goodyear Police encourages everyone to make seat belt use a habit. Every seat, every ride.
