The Bellflower City Council has adopted the 2025-27 Strategic Plan, which outlines five overarching goals designed to strengthen governance, clarify organizational priorities, establish benchmarks, meaningful performance measures and align the City's long-term direction. She began her City career in 2006 as a part-time administrative assistant in the Parking Division, bringing with her a passion for public-facing work and customer service. Although she entered local government with no prior experience in municipal operations, Melissa quickly learned the importance of providing excellent customer service across all departments, a foundation that supported her continued growth and advancement.
She later accepted a role with the Code Enforcement Division as an Executive Assistant I, where she expanded her knowledge of City operations and regulatory processes. Today, Melissa serves as an Executive Assistant III to the Director of Planning and Building Services, providing essential administrative and organizational support to the department.

Her work plays a key role in helping the Planning Department meet legal requirements and maintain transparency with the community.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Melissa's work has been witnessing Bellflower's growth firsthand. Over the past decade, she has followed numerous development projects from concept through completion, gaining a unique perspective on how thoughtful planning contributes to the City's progress
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Melissa has demonstrated outstanding leadership and dedication to her colleagues. She has served as Union Secretary and Union President for 14 years, working collaboratively with City leadership and union members. She has also served on several boards over the years and is currently a member of the Bellflower Employee Engagement Team, helping organize events that foster connection and morale among City employees.
Outside of City Hall, Melissa enjoys spending time with her family. She and her husband of 23 years have two children who keep them busy. Her daughter is an aspiring animator pursuing an art degree at CSULB, and her son is active in travel baseball and preparing to start high school.
Whether serving the public, supporting fellow employees or contributing to Bellflower's continued growth, Melissa Atkinson's dedication and service make her a valued member of the City of Bellflower team.
