Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus announced that the Main Street Bridge #2 in the Town of Cornwall is now open, five months ahead of schedule and under budget, with minimal "punch list" items left to complete. This achievement marks a major milestone in the County's ongoing commitment to upgrade critical infrastructure while being fiscally responsible.
The newly replaced bridge, located adjacent to Chadeayne Circle and spanning Idlewild Creek along County Route 9 (Main Street), replaces the original 1929 structure that had reached the end of its useful life. The upgraded design includes safety enhancements, improved pedestrian access, and standout architectural details like sculpted parapet walls, decorative lamp posts, and iron fencing that bring both functionality and visual appeal to the gateway of Cornwall.
"This bridge is more than just a means to get from point A to point B; it also serves as a signature gateway into the Town of Cornwall," said Neuhaus. "I'm proud of our Department of Public Works and project partners for delivering a high-quality upgrade ahead of schedule. It's a clear example of government working efficiently and effectively for the people we serve."
Led by the OCDPW, the project was constructed by Transit Halmar JV with design and inspection by HVEA Engineers. Despite the bridge's location in a busy corridor, the team was able to maintain two-way traffic throughout nearly the entire construction period, minimizing inconvenience to residents and local businesses.
"This project is a great example of smart planning and teamwork delivering real results for our residents," said Neuhaus. "Finishing this bridge ahead of schedule and under budget demonstrates our commitment to strengthening infrastructure and our ongoing investment in the future of communities like Cornwall."
DPW Commissioner Erik Denega expressed pride in the outcome: "We appreciate the numerous compliments the County has received regarding this project. This bridge is a gateway into town, and we wanted it to reflect the pride Cornwall residents have in their community. Our DPW engineering team and HVEA envisioned a structure that not only serves a purpose but also adds character to the Main Street corridor."
Denega also thanked County Legislative Chairman Kevin Hines for his support in coordinating with local officials and residents, as well as the cooperation from the Town of Cornwall and Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson water department. He noted that Transit Halmar JV's ability to finish ahead of schedule with minimal traffic disruption is a testament to the team's efficiency and planning.
About the Project:
Main Street Bridge #2 carries County Route 9 over Idlewild Creek in the heart of Cornwall. Originally constructed in 1929, the bridge had exceeded its serviceable life. The replacement project includes full bridge reconstruction, pedestrian improvements, and utilized staged construction to allow continuous two-way traffic over the course of the build.
