NASHVILLE - In recognition of National Weights and Measures Week, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) is highlighting the role exact measurements play in protecting consumers and ensuring fairness in Tennessee's marketplace.
Celebrated annually March 1-7 to commemorate the signing of the first U.S. weights and measures law in 1799, this year's theme - "We Measure What Matters" - underscores how accurate measurement supports trust, equity and confidence in every commercial transaction.
A key component of Tennessee's measurement program is TDA's small mass laboratory, where three metrologists calibrate the highly precise weights that verify commercial scales across the state. From grocery stores and feed mills to packaging facilities and industrial operations, these meticulous calibrations ensure the accuracy, fairness and reliability that sustain commerce and industry statewide.
"Our metrology laboratories are where precision begins for commerce across Tennessee," Dr. Adam Travis, Assistant Commissioner for Consumer and Industry Services, said. "The calibrations we perform-down to fractions of a milligram- provide the accuracy businesses rely on every day. While our work happens behind the scenes, it ensures trust between buyer and seller every time something is purchased by weight."
The small mass lab specializes in legal metrology weights of less than 5 kilograms (10 pounds). Its most common service is calibrating a 30-pound weight kit containing 25-35 stainless steel weights of varying denominations. At the smallest scale, the lab calibrates weights as small as 1 milligram with an uncertainty of 0.00052 milligrams - approximately the mass of a single grain of pollen.
The lab has also handled some uniquely memorable items. Among the most unusual was weighing silver dust for the state's archivists, ensuring accurate preservation of Tennessee's historical materials.
TDA's metrologists calibrate precision weights for other state laboratories and for commercial clients who depend on highly accurate measurements, such as pharmaceutical manufacturers, dog food production plants, chicken processing plants and medical blood providers that send their weights for calibration. This work supports both regulatory consistency and consumer confidence across a wide range of industries.
If Tennesseans have bought or sold anything by weight, they have been directly impacted by the work performed at TDA's Johnson Metrology Laboratory. The theme "We Measure What Matters" highlights the dedication of TDA's metrologists to delivering the accuracy that affects every household and business in the state.
