NASSAU, The Bahamas - On Friday, October 31, 2025, Ministry of National Security staff presented the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group with a donation of five ports and 48 needles at the Ministry. This organization offers a safe and caring environment for those whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.
Asst. Supt. Kenya Culmer said, "The initiative was birthed because this year, I celebrate my 10th year as a cancer survivor, and I wanted to do something bigger than myself and give back to the organization that gave me my (chemo) port.
A port is a small medical device implanted under the skin to provide easy access to a large vein for treatments like chemotherapy, blood draws, and other IV fluids.
The implant eliminates the need for repeated needle sticks in the arm or hand, reducing discomfort, vein damage, and infection risk. Ports can be used for weeks, months, or even years and can be submerged in water, but require proper care to prevent complications like infection or blood clots.
Asst. Supt. Culmer said, "We are also donating needles. Needles are very expensive - I think each needle costs about $80 and each port costs about $500."
Acting Permanent Secretary Gaynell Rolle said, "On behalf of our Minister, the Hon. Wayne Monroe and the staff, it gives us much pleasure to be able to give this donation today to Sister Sister, and I am sure that it will go a long way."
The Acting PS said all agencies under the Ministry of National Security umbrella came together for the games, seminars and workshops organized for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
She also noted several revenue-generating activities, and the Ministry matched the sum raised.
Representatives, Ethel Johnson and Linda Arnette thanked the Ministry for the donation on behalf of the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group.
