Washington, D.C. - Tonight, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following video statement after voting against additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without statutory guardrails to change Trump administration tactics in Minneapolis and other U.S. cities.
"I've been very clear that I wouldn't vote for another dime for ICE until we saw real reforms. And not just promises of reforms, but statutory requirements that attack these mass sweeps against the opposition of mayors and governors, these lawless intrusions into people's home without warrants, masked agents without any identification," said Senator Schiff in his video.
Read the full transcript below:
Schiff: I just got done voting on the funding bill for DHS and ICE. I voted no, and I want to take a moment to explain why. So, I don't see any signs that they're de-escalating what's happening in Minneapolis. And in the weeks since the terrible murder of Alex Pretti and notwithstanding the President's dispatch of Greg Bovino out of Minnesota, nothing really seems to have changed. In fact, Donald Trump said this last night.
Reporter (in clip): So, you're not pulling back.
Trump (in clip): No, no, not at all.
Schiff: So, he's not stopping. Tom Homan, who was brought in supposedly to be the adult in the room, is another immigration extremist. And this is what he had to say.
Homan (in clip): We are not surrendering the President's mission on immigration enforcement. Let's make that clear.
Schiff: And now they're arresting journalists. So, I don't see any sign of good faith or change in policy or anything like that. And I've been very clear that I wouldn't vote for another dime for ICE.
Schiff (on Senate floor): Not another dime.
Schiff (on Meet the Press): I'm not giving ICE or Border Patrol another dime.
Schiff: Until we saw real reforms. And not just promises of reforms, but statutory requirements that attack these mass sweeps against the opposition of mayors and governors, these lawless intrusions into people's home without warrants, masked agents without any identification. I want those masks off. I want badges on. I want to see body cams on, so we have good records of what's happening on our streets. I want to end this excessive use of force. So, I want to see those reforms before I'm prepared to support any more funding for these agencies. So, I've been clear about this. Look, I completely support our negotiators on this. I think they're negotiating hard, and I appreciate their efforts. I hope we're successful. I just don't see across the table at the White House any measure of good faith. And I want it in writing in statute.
