City of Birmingham Offices to Close Friday Due to Potential Winter Storm

Birmingham City Hall and city offices will be closed Friday, January 10, 2025 due to the potential for a winter storm. The Birmingham Police Department, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, and Communications Department (911) will continue normal operations during this time period.

The city will activate SWIFTT teams including public works and transportation. A SWIFTT activation positions city crews to respond to deteriorating street conditions with sand trucks and road closure barricades. During a winter storm event, the Department of Public Works emphasizes the sanding of main thoroughfares and routes to medical facilities.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the northern third of Central Alabama including the City of Birmingham. The winter storm warning is in effect from midnight, Friday, January 10, 2025 through Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 6 a.m.

Residents are advised to monitor weather reports leading up to and during this period.

Residents wishing to receive non-emergency updates from the city can text BHAMREADY to 38276.

*Previously, we shared expanded hours related to the city's warming station partnership with Jimmie Hale Mission. Birmingham Police Department officers are also monitoring public spaces such as parks. If officers see individuals experiencing homelessness or needing shelter, they are offering rides to the warming station.
