Much of what happens beneath the surface of our rivers, lakes and oceans cannot be seen from the ground. Yet satellites can reveal subtle changes in water quality, monitor shrinking wetlands, detect pollution and help authorities respond before problems become crises.
World Water Week highlights the importance of protecting and sustainably managing one of our planet's most precious resources. Understanding how rivers, lakes, wetlands and oceans are changing is the first step, and space plays an important role in providing that knowledge.
Through its role in supporting the uptake of Copernicus services, EUSPA helps ensure that Earth observation (EO) data is transformed into practical information for water management, environmental monitoring and climate resilience. The Copernicus Sentinel satellites provide a continuous view of our planet's water, revealing changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. By combining high-resolution optical and radar imagery with observations collected on the ground, Copernicus helps track water quality, monitor long-term climate impacts and detect environmental hazards such as oil spills. Copernicus also monitors freshwater bodies and wetlands, helping track changes in permanent and temporary surface water over time.
These capabilities are already transforming sectors that depend on healthy aquatic ecosystems. According to the EU Space Market Report 2026, EO data is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for monitoring aquaculture sites, complementing traditional in-situ equipment such as water quality and acoustic sensors, current metres and underwater cameras. Today's high-resolution satellite data, including the detection of algae indicators such as surface foam, provides aquaculture producers with early warnings that were previously difficult or expensive to obtain. This remote, scalable monitoring supports faster and better-informed decisions.
Pollution often spreads unnoticed across rivers, lakes and oceans before it becomes visible from the ground. Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites help detect oil spills using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which can produce high-resolution images even through clouds and at night. Because floating oil dampens ocean waves, spills appear as distinctive dark features on SAR imagery, enabling authorities to detect pollution and respond more quickly.
Yet Copernicus reveals far more than oil on the water's surface. High-resolution optical sensors aboard Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites measure water reflectance and other optical properties to monitor chlorophyll-a concentrations, an important indicator of algae and phytoplankton abundance. These microscopic organisms form the foundation of aquatic ecosystems and are a key indicator of water and ecosystem health.
Satellite-derived information supports informed decision-making at every level. National authorities use it to strengthen environmental policies, while local authorities rely on downstream applications based on Copernicus data to manage bathing waters, respond to pollution incidents and protect vulnerable ecosystems. These capabilities are also driving a growing ecosystem of innovative downstream applications across Europe.
One example is SeaCras, a CASSINI alumni company, that combines Copernicus satellite imagery with AI to monitor water quality, marine litter and coastal ecosystems, helping authorities and tourism operators make evidence-based decisions.
Water plays a fundamental role in regulating Earth's climate, making continuous monitoring essential. Copernicus provides scientists, policymakers and water managers with the observations they need to understand long-term changes and prepare for future challenges.
These topics were also at the heart of the Copernicus Thematic Workshop on Water, which explored how EO can support evidence-based water management across Europe.
This World Water Week, these capabilities remind us that protecting water begins with understanding it. Through Copernicus and innovative space-based applications, the EU Space Programme transforms those hidden changes into knowledge that helps protect communities, supports sustainable water management and safeguards our environment for future generations.
