Nevada City - Caltrans invites the public to join an open house for the $13.9 million State Route 49 (SR 49) Multimodal Corridor Improvement Project on Thursday, October 2, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Nevada County Government Center, Nevada County Board of Supervisors' Chamber, 950 Maidu Avenue, in Nevada City.
The purpose of the meeting is for the public to learn more about the project and provide input on the proposed improvements along the corridor.
The project runs along SR 49 from the intersection with State Route 20 to the Nevada County Juvenile Hall and proposes to enhance safety by constructing two roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, shared-use paths, sidewalks and installing new lighting and signage.
The highway's current configuration lacks continuous bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure for safe crossings, limiting the ability of the public to safely access the Eric Rood Administrative Center, recreation destinations, or connect from those facilities into Nevada City.
This project was developed in partnership with the Nevada County Transportation Commission (NCTC). For additional information on its efforts please visit the NCTC website. The Project Approval and Environmental Document (PA&ED) phase is anticipated to be complete by the end of this year, with construction scheduled to begin in spring 2028.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to "Be Work Zone Alert" and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements
