City Launches First-Ever Engage DSM: Resident Academy

DES MOINES, IOWA - Friday, February 14, 2025 - Ever wonder how city government really works? Residents can now get an inside look at the 17 Departments that support the city of Des Moines with the inaugural Engage DSM: Resident Academy.

This spring, residents are invited to go behind the scenes with the City of Des Moines to gain a new view on how the city runs, and applications are now open.

"We are excited to bring this informational and interactive program to our residents," Des Moines Equity and Civil Rights Director Manisha Paudel said. "Engage DSM: Resident Academy offers a view into our city and encourages residents to learn about ways to engage with their local government."

This civic engagement program allows residents to meet city leaders, learn how each department operates, discover how to access city services, opportunities to join committees, boards and commissions, tour City facilities and get a first-hand look at how the City of Des Moines serves its residents.

Whether a long-term resident or new to the area, this resident academy is open for all interested community members. Des Moines residents are highly encouraged to apply.
The six-week program consist of one session per week from 5:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M, with a graduation ceremony following the completion of the program

  • Week 1: 4/2 at Municipal Services Center
  • Week 2: 4/9 at Franklin Library
  • Week 3: 4/16 at Waveland Golf Course
  • Week 4: 4/23 at ATM Fire Admin Building
  • Week 5: 4/30 at Municipal Services Center 2
  • Week 6: 5/7 at Pioneer Columbus Community Recreation Center
  • Graduation Ceremony: 5/14 at City Hall Council Chambers

This is a rare chance to gain valuable insights into the essential services that keeps the city thriving. However, spots are limited and applications close Monday, March 3.
