During the March 24 Regular Assembly Meeting, the Anchorage Assembly unanimously approved the appointment of twelve new members to the Board of Equalization, a quasi-judicial board to hear tax assessment appeals brought forward by property owners. Including the nine previously seated members, 21 people now serve on the Board of Equalization.
"For the first time in at least twenty years, every seat on the Board is filled," said Board of Equalization Chair Ian Moore. "With 1,953 appeals, it's time to get to work."
Earlier this month, Assembly Chair Christopher Constant and Vice Chair Anna Brawley issued a call for applications to fill vacant board seats and increase the Board's capacity to hear the mass of appeals in a timely manner.
"To those residents and neighbors who answered the call to serve, thank you," said Assembly Chair Constant. "Your work helps ensure property owners have a fair, transparent process to appeal assessments and reflects the important role residents play in keeping local government accountable. We're grateful for your time, care, and commitment to our community."
In February this year, the Assembly approved AR 2026-34(S), As Amended to request the Municipal Assessor submit a written report by April 28 to summarize the general patterns or themes observed within the tranche of appeals received this spring and the status of those appeals by the reporting date. The requested report may also forecast potential changes to the property valuation or review process based on the 2026 appeal cycle.
"There are questions yet to be answered," said Assembly Vice Chair Brawley, "and we know there's much work to be done. Today, we celebrate a community coming together and look forward to what we'll learn together in the weeks to come."
