From Iowa to India: Applications open for Iowa Farm Bureau Market Study Tour

Agriculture operates in a global marketplace with customers in every corner of the world. To help farmers explore opportunities beyond major trading partners like China, Iowa Farm Bureau is taking farmers to India-the world's most populous country-through its upcoming Market Study Tour.

"As we work to build new markets for Iowa's agricultural products, India must be part of our trade portfolio," said Brent Johnson, Iowa Farm Bureau president. "India leads the world in youth population and presents export opportunities in the short term and for decades to come. This trip will allow Iowa farmers to see India's cultural and economic diversity on full display."

The tour, scheduled for Feb. 19-28, 2027, will offer participants an inside look at India's rapidly expanding economy, agricultural systems and evolving consumer trends. The itinerary includes Mumbai, India's financial capital; agricultural hubs in southern India such as Coimbatore and Ooty; and the nation's capital, New Delhi.

Along the way, participants will meet with foreign agencies and visit a wide range of agricultural operations, from vegetable farms and tea estates to livestock systems, egg production facilities, coconut groves and banana farms. The tour also includes visits to rural markets, historical landmarks, small-scale manufacturing sites and the world's largest spice market.

"More than 40% of India's workforce is employed in agriculture," said Dr. Christopher Pudenz, Iowa Farm Bureau's economist. "Even as incomes rise and urbanization continues, food security remains an important challenge for hundreds of millions of Indian citizens. Iowa farmers are well-positioned to support India through high-quality livestock feed ingredients like dried distillers grains and soybean meal."

The cost is $2,500 per Iowa Farm Bureau member and includes airfare, shared hotel accommodations and meals. A private room is available for an additional $1,100. Spouses are welcome to attend at the full rate, estimated at up to $7,075, pending final airfare.

Applications are due July 24, 2026. For participant requirements and a detailed itinerary, visit https://www.iowafarmbureau.com/News/Market-Study-Tour.
