Stansbury Spends Week Connecting with Thousands of New Mexicans as GOP Shutdown Drags Into Fourth Week

ALBUQUERQUE- On day 24 of the Republican government shutdown, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury(NM-01) recapped a busy week at home connecting with New Mexicans and working to deliver for families across the state-while House Republicans continue to refuse to engage in bipartisan negotiations to save health care and fund the government.

Over the past week, Rep. Stansbury:

  • Distributed food to families in need through the lifesaving programs at the Storehouse West.
  • Delivered care packages to federal workers-currently working without pay-at New Mexico Social Security offices.
  • Held in-person town halls in Rio Rancho and Albuquerque, virtual and telephone town halls connecting with thousands across the country.
  • Updated Bipartisan Elected Officials in her district so they are better prepared to help their communities.
  • Met with TSA officers and other federal employees who continue to work without pay to keep New Mexicans safe.
  • Met with over a dozen Tribal Pueblo Governors to discuss the shutdown's impact on critical tribal programs and services.
  • Hosted furloughed federal workers at a local brewery to thank them for their service and connect them with available resources.
  • Introduced two bills to protect and expand tribal housing programs.
  • After hearing from so many families with fears about SNAP and WIC cuts, she will introduce legislation requiring the Trump Administration to continue funding SNAP and WIC programs during the shutdown.

"This week, I heard countless stories from New Mexicans about how this Republican shutdown is hurting families-from federal workers going without paychecks to parents struggling to put food on the table," said Rep. Stansbury. "The fear and uncertainty around losing SNAP benefits and access to food is overwhelming. That's why I got to work immediately on legislation to protect SNAP and keep families from going hungry during the shutdown. I also heard from families terrified that their health insurance premiums will skyrocket next year unless Democrats keep fighting to protect affordable care."

Rep. Stansbury continued,

"I'm heading back to Washington next week with a clear message: Democrats are showing up and fighting for the people. Health care, food security, and our economy are on the line-lives literally depend on it."
