If convicted as charged, Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison

LANCASTER, Calif. - A 36-year-old Lancaster man who allegedly killed his wife and fled to Peru with their children has been extradited and surrendered to Los Angeles County authorities.

"After deliberately fleeing the country, the defendant has been returned to Los Angeles County to face the full weight of the law," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. "Attempts to evade justice will not succeed. While he is presumed innocent until proven guilty, this extradition ensures he will now be held responsible through the legal process. Domestic violence shatters families and devastates communities and our office is unwavering in its commitment to hold accountable anyone accused of committing these violent acts."

Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo (dob 9/26/88) is charged in case 25AVCF01441 with one count of murder with a special allegation that he used a knife as a deadly weapon.

He was returned to Los Angeles County Dec. 12 following coordinated efforts between federal authorities, Peruvian officials and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Cornejo's arraignment is scheduled for today in Department A1 of the Antelope Valley Courthouse.

The victim, 33-year-old Sheylla Lisbet Cabrera, was allegedly killed on Aug. 10 at the Lancaster apartment where she lived with the defendant and their three children. After the alleged homicide, Cabrera Cornejo took the children and fled to Peru.

If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Diane Hong and Tyler Zaremba of the Family Violence Division and remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Marshals Service, INTERPOL Washington, U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service, the Peruvian Embassy in the United States and Peruvian law enforcement authorities provided critical assistance in securing the arrest and extradition.

The charges filed in this case are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
