Construction continues at Dwight Murphy Field as crews make steady progress on underground infrastructure and begin assembling key park features. As of March 2026, the Dwight Murphy Field Renovation Project passed 36% completion.
Earlier stages of construction focused on preparing the 10-acre site, including demolition, grading, and utility relocation. Despite heavy winter storms causing delays while the work site dried out, crews have made steady progress on critical underground and structural work.
Work completed to date includes:
Over the coming months, work will continue on more visible park features, including construction of the restroom building and sculpting of the trees around the Magical Treehouse.
The project remains on schedule, and the park is expected to reopen in late spring of 2027.
The renovated park will feature Santa Barbara's first all-abilities playground, Gwendolyn's Playground, which will include a multi-story treehouse, hill slides, inclusive swings, musical play elements, and a calming pod. A new multi-sport field, sized to accommodate youth and adult soccer, rugby, and lacrosse, will feature defined areas on the sidelines for players and spectators, as well as improved sports lighting. Additional park improvements include an expanded outdoor fitness area, a large turf area for drop-in activities and picnics, a shaded group picnic area, new restrooms, new walking paths with lighting, and increased parking.
