WWU to host free week of activities in honor of Veteran's Day

October 30, 2025

In honor of the sacrifices of veterans and their families, Western welcomes veterans and dependents to participate in all free events throughout the week of Nov. 4-8. For more information, see the list of events below!

Monday

  • 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Lunch will be catered in Viking Commons 525 in the Veteran Service Office.
  • 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Fly Fishing with Project Healing Waters on the lawn between Viking Commons and MathesHall (Viking Union MPR if the weather does not permit us to be outside.)

Project Healing Waters helps active military service personnel and Veterans in need through a dedicated, developed curriculum of fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying, and fly rod building. In 2024 alone, we helped 6,820 participants comprised of all service eras through the generous work of 6,329 active volunteers.

Wednesday

  • 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. "Big Astronomy" Planetarium show in the library.

Big Astronomy shares the story of the people and places who make big astronomy and big science happen. The planetarium show transports viewers to Chile where the dark skies and dry, remote setting create ideal conditions to observe the Universe. Chile hosts much of the world's leading ground-based observing infrastructure, and the US and other countries are investing billions of dollars in furthering astronomy partnerships in the country. Big Astronomy introduces audiences to a wide variety of people involved in advancing astronomical discovery, and is narrated by Barbara Rojas-Ayala, a Chilean astronomer.

The Spanel Planetarium is located on the 3rd floor of the Haggard Hall Library. There is no access from the classroom side of Haggard Hall.

From the circulation desk, take the stairs or the elevator to the third floor and head right down the hall to a grey door. The door opens five minutes before the show starts. Please do not knock or rattle the handle because there may be a show in progress. Please do not ask library staff to open the door for you.
