Walberg-Backed SAVE America Act Passes House

Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) released the following statement after the House passage of the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote, improve the ability of states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls, and require voter ID.

"Americans need a valid ID to drive a car, pick up a prescription, and open a bank account, yet many do not need to display a valid ID to participate in federal elections," saidRep. Walberg. "Requiring voter ID and proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections isn't just common sense, it is supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans. The SAVE America Act will keep foreign interference out of our elections, strengthen our election integrity, and restore public trust in our federal elections."

Background

Thirty-six states requires voters to show some form of ID to cast a ballot. However, that leaves many states with little to no safeguards to verify who is casting a ballot in federal elections. Despite finding noncitizens and similarly ineligible restraints on voter rolls, fourteen states still refuse to require photo ID for voting.
