James Peirce receives 2025 Eagle Teaching Excellence Award

UW-La Crosse is home to many outstanding instructors who make a difference in students' lives inside and outside the classroom.

This year, UWL's Provost Office received hundreds of nominations from students hoping to recognize their favorite faculty. From these nominations, a university committee selected six faculty to receive 2025 Eagle Teaching Excellence Awards.

They are:

This is the fifth of six stories highlighting the winners.

James Peirce, Mathematics & Statistics

Started at UWL: 2004

Courses: I am in the Mathematics & Statistics Department, which means that we teach students from just about every major. In general, I teach courses in applied mathematics and provide skills necessary for our students to succeed in their future careers. Specifically, I teach courses related to my research interest in mathematical biology and courses for non-majors, such as Mathematics for Business, Applied Calculus and Elementary Statistics.

Background: I was a graduate student and taught a bunch of mathematics classes at the University of California, Davis.

Favorite part of teaching: My favorite part of teaching is interacting with our students. Office hours and mentoring undergraduate research projects create some of the best conversations and mathematical growth. I enjoy meeting them where they are and pushing them to go a little further.
