NEW LONDON, Conn. - Today, at New London Pier, Attorney General William Tong, New London Mayor Michael Passero, and several climate organizations, shared local stories of offshore wind's economic, health, and climate benefits, as well as important updates on the fight to defend offshore wind in Connecticut.

In September, the Trump Administration halted work on Revolution Wind, an offshore wind project 32 miles southeast of the Connecticut coast. At the time, the project was 80 percent completed. The action threatened local jobs and Connecticut's clean energy future. Attorney General Tong, alongside Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to ensure Connecticut can pursue clean and renewable offshore wind.

During the press conference, 16 groups presented Attorney General Tong with a letter celebrating his work fighting the Trump Administration's attacks on the offshore industry.

"The Port of New London is evidence of the economic impact of this new American industry that is the offshore wind energy supply chain," said New London Mayor Michael Passero. "State Pier, a long-neglected, underutilized state asset, was transformed into a premier East Coast marine terminal thanks to the offshore wind industry. Union workers rebuilt the facility, with local contractors from southeastern Connecticut also participating. The Connecticut Port Authority now earns more revenue than ever before from the shipping of offshore wind turbine components to and from State Pier. All of these direct benefits have led to indirect benefits for subcontractors and small businesses across the region."

"Harnessing the breeze off the Atlantic coast is the key to powering our homes, bettering our local economies, and improving public health for all here in Connecticut," said Samantha Dynowski, Sierra Club Connecticut Chapter Director. "New London is among the first Connecticut towns to so clearly experience the benefits of offshore wind development. Because of the hard work nearly completed here, 350,000 homes will receive clean power. Offshore wind is our state's offramp, making Connectiut less dependent on costly fossil fuel projects that raise our energy bills. As Revolution Wind nears the finish line, we will continue to champion the project and look forward to when its clean power and cost savings reaches homes."

"It's fitting that we are holding this event in the middle of the latest COP meeting on Climate Change. Those who take science seriously understand that climate change is the single greatest challenge we face today, with devastating consequences for us if we fail to meet that challenge," said Charles Rothenberger, Director of Government Relations for Save the Sound. "At the same time, we need to improve the resilience and reliability of our electric grid while also addressing the rising energy costs that households are facing. Offshore Wind is the perfect solution to all of these problems. It is the single largest source of zero-carbon domestic energy available to New England in the near term, its generation profile is ideally suited to address winter reliability concerns, and multiple analyses have shown its potential to save ratepayers money by lowering wholesale energy prices and insulating customers from the impacts of natural gas price volatility."

"Connecticut has already laid the groundwork for being a leader in offshore wind. We must continue to invest in these projects that offer sustainable jobs as well as affordable, reliable, renewable energy for our communities. Saying Yes To Offshore Wind will help keep us on track to meet our climate goals," said Connor Yakaitis Deputy Director at CTLCV.

"Offshore wind is not just about reducing emissions and improving grid reliability; it's about creating good-paying jobs and opportunities for Connecticut families," said Allison Pilcher, Policy Director at the Connecticut Roundtable on Climate and Jobs. "By supporting offshore wind, we can reduce pollution that disproportionately impacts frontline communities, while ensuring these communities can benefit directly from the clean energy economy through jobs, workforce development, and supply chain opportunities."
