WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) is announcing her updated committee membership for the 119th Congress. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries appointed her to serve on the Steering and Policy Committee, the primary decision-making body for House Democrats. She will also continue her service on the Judiciary Committee, where she will remain the Ranking Member of the Immigration Subcommittee. In addition, she will be joining the Foreign Affairs Committee.
"I am excited about continuing to serve my constituents and continuing to play leadership roles for House Democrats on critical issues. I am proud to continue my service on the prestigious Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Constitution, democracy, and many important topics. I am also proud to continue to serve as the top Democrat on the Immigration Subcommittee. As one of only two dozen naturalized citizens to serve in Congress, I know firsthand how critical it is that we move forward with real solutions that modernize our immigration laws and provide legal pathways for immigrants to work, live, and contribute to our country while securing our border and ensuring an orderly and fair process. As Republicans seek to villainize and scapegoat immigrants and implement their Project 2025 plans for mass deportation, I am proud to continue to lead Democratic efforts to oppose those efforts and instead seek real solutions.
"I am also proud to bring both professional and personal lived experiences to the Foreign Affairs Committee. Washington's 7th Congressional District is one of the most vibrant and important hubs of international health and development, with critical organizations and foundations headquartered in Seattle. Prior to coming to Congress, I spent nearly a decade working with international non-profit organizations, working across Asia, Africa, and Latin America on critical health and development projects as well as carrying out an international fellowship living in villages in India for two years to work on poverty, health, and development issues. In Congress, as Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, I continued my international work engaging with high-level leaders in countries around the world and advocating for development and human rights around the world. On a personal level, as someone who has worked and lived all over the world, this is a wonderful opportunity for me to return to issues that are personal passions. I am so proud to serve under the strong leadership of Ranking Member Gregory Meeks and ready to get to work on this critically important set of issues."
