Addis Statement on SCOTUS Ruling on Voting by Mail

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay) released the following statement on the United States Supreme Court's ruling to block the Trump Administration's restrictions on voting by mail:

"I applaud the Supreme Court for upholding the U.S. Constitution by ensuring that elections remain free and fair-especially by protecting the right to vote by mail. The attempts by the Trump Administration to undermine the core tenets of our democracy show why we need laws on the books in California to protect our electoral processes. Excited to see my legislation AB 1876 and AB 2691 move to the Governor's Desk to restore faith in our elections."

Earlier this year, Addis introduced two bills to improve transparency and trust in California's elections:

AB 1539, the Protect Our Democracy Act, makes it a crime to try to place someone on the ballot for President or Vice President if they are not legally eligible to serve because they have already reached the constitutional term limit. Fundamentally, this bill codifies the 22nd Amendment that was ratified in 1951.

AB 2691, the Public Trust Protection Act, adds sexual assault and human sex trafficking to the list of disqualifying convictions to hold elected office in California, and ensures that out-of-state and international convictions are included regardless of where the crimes were committed.

Both bills passed the legislature with bipartisan support and now await action by the Governor. Governor Newsom has until September 30, 2026, to sign the measures into law.
