SAN FRANCISCO - Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, congratulates State Senator Scott Wiener on his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in California's 11th Congressional District. Wiener will make history as the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent San Francisco in Congress.

Equality California Executive Director Tony Hoang released the following statement:

"Scott Wiener's victory is a historic moment for San Franciscans who will be represented by an openly LGBTQ+ person in congress for the first time.

At a time when LGBTQ+ rights are under attack, Scott's victory sends a proven champion to Washington with an unmatched record of fighting for our community, advancing landmark protections, and delivering real results.

We have worked alongside Scott for a decade to expand access to HIV prevention, protect LGBTQ+ seniors and young people, and make California a refuge for transgender youth and their families. He has taken on some of the toughest fights in Sacramento and delivered protections that have changed people's lives.

As the Trump administration continues to strip away our rights and healthcare and put the lives of vulnerable Americans at stake, Scott will bring that same determination to Washington.

Equality California was proud to stand with Scott throughout this race and help mobilize voters to send him to Congress. We congratulate Scott and his entire campaign team on this hard-earned victory and look forward to working together to defend our progress and advance equality nationwide."

During his tenure in the California State Senate, Wiener authored landmark legislation to expand access to PrEP, strengthen protections for LGBTQ+ seniors in long-term care, and protect transgender people's privacy. He authored SB 107, establishing California as a refuge for transgender youth and their families seeking medically necessary healthcare.

Equality California Votes, the independent federal super PAC aligned with Equality California, has invested over half a million in support of Wiener's candidacy. The campaign's ads, including "Medicare for All," highlight Wiener's record of lowering healthcare costs, including capping insulin costs at $35 per month, and are running on digital, streaming and cable tv platforms.

Equality California endorsed Wiener in December 2025 and hosted an LGBTQ+ mega-canvass in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign, Victory Fund, and Alice B. Toklas Democratic Club, in addition to sponsoring multiple Winning for Wiener phonebanks with the Human Rights Campaign.
