"The Supreme Court reached the right decision in reaffirming a constitutional principle that has defined our nation for more than 150 years. Birthright citizenship is rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment and is a cornerstone of who we are as a country.

New York City is the world's greatest immigrant city, and generations of families have helped build our communities because this promise has endured. At a time of deep division, today's ruling affirms that the Constitution cannot be rewritten by executive order.

The City Council will continue standing up for immigrant New Yorkers. That commitment is reflected in the budget agreement we reached today, which includes a historic $81.8 million investment in immigrant legal services to help ensure New Yorkers have access to the representation and due process they deserve."
