Burglary Suspects Arrested in Mountain View

Mountain View, CA - Two burglary suspects were arrested after fleeing from the scene and colliding with Mountain View police vehicles.

On Sunday, April 12, at approximately 1:57 a.m., Mountain View police officers responded to a burglary in progress in the 1200 block of Pear Avenue. A live video monitoring security company reported two suspects were using tools to cut into a secure storage area in the underground parking garage. As officers arrived, the suspects fled the garage in a vehicle and struck one of the responding patrol vehicles, causing minor damage to its front bumper.

The suspect vehicle continued to flee and collided with another responding patrol vehicle at the intersection of Pear Avenue and Shoreline Boulevard, causing major damage to both vehicles. The suspect vehicle became disabled shortly after the collision, and both suspects fled on foot.

As one of the suspects, later identified as 37-year-old Edwin Monge Flores, attempted to jump over a fence, he was taken into custody with the assistance of Mountain View Police Service Dog (PSD), Atlas. The second suspect, later identified as 43-year-old Renato Castillo, was also taken into custody shortly after the collision by officers in a nearby parking lot. It was later determined that the vehicle used by Castillo and Monge Flores was stolen in Sunnyvale.

Monge Flores, transient out of Mountain View, was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple felony offenses, including vehicle theft (VC 10851(a)), hit-and-run causing injury (VC 20001(a)), evading a peace officer with reckless driving (VC 2800.2(a)), assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer (PC 245(c)), attempted burglary (PC 664/459), resisting arrest (PC 148(a)(1)), criminal conspiracy (PC 182(a)(1)) and probation violation (PC 3455 (a)).

Castillo, who is also transient, was also booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for attempted burglary (PC 664/459), resisting arrest (PC 148(a)(1)), possession of burglary tools (PC 466(a)), criminal conspiracy (PC 182(a)(1)), possession of drug paraphernalia (HS 11364(a)), and probation violation (PC 3455(a)).

During the incident, a Mountain View police officer suffered minor injuries as a result of the second collision. They were treated at a local hospital and later released.

The investigation is ongoing, as Mountain View Police detectives are looking into whether Castillo and Monge Flores were involved in other similar incidents.
