Halloween is a fun and exciting time of the year for the whole family, including our furry friends. Palm Beach County Public Safety Department Animal Care and Control Division (PBCACC) has a few safety tips to ensure that pets are kept safe and sound this spooky season.

-
Loud noises, strangers coming to the door, and constant doorbells can cause pets to become stressed and potentially open an opportunity for escape. Give your pets a quiet, safe hiding spot away from the door and ensure microchip information is up to date. The best way to make sure your pet is returned home safely and efficiently is with up-to-date microchip information.
-
Taking your pet trick-or-treating? Keep them securely by your side with a leash, carrier, or stroller for the safety of your pet and those around you.
-
Keep pets away from raisins, chocolate, and candies that include xylitol (a sweetener often found in low calorie, low sugar products). These ingredients are toxic for pets.
-
Candles and lit jack-o-lanterns can burn and items like glow sticks, small decorations, costume pieces, and candies can cause intestinal blockages so keep them out of reach of pets.
-
Dressing up your pet? Make sure pet costumes fit properly, don't have pieces that can be easily chewed or present a choking hazard, and don't hinder your pet's sight, hearing, breathing, opening the mouth, or movement. Pets should never be unsupervised while in costume.
