Feb 04, 2026 From Aztecas del Norte to Chichimecas en Aztlán: The Arrival of an Indigenous Mexican Identity through Danza Tolteca-Chichimeca in San Diego

In the early 1970s, in the first wave of the Chicano Movement, a tradition then known as Danza Azteca was brought to the US, transforming the Chicana/o/e identity and sacred space. This exhibition traces the arrival of the Danza tradition to the Chicana/o/e Community in San Diego in 1974 and its development into a significant expression of Chicana/o/e spirituality and indigenous identity in the US over the last 52 years.

Curated by Andres Ehecatl Aguilar, Mario E. Aguilar, and Beatrice Zamora Aguilar, the exhibit will have an opening reception on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the John Spoor Broome Library, 2nd floor. The exhibit will be available for viewing through March 13, 2026.

This event is made possible with the support of the Art Program, Chicana/o Studies, The Mexicayotl Indio Cultural Center and an IRA.
