Tempe This Week May 18, 2026

The final portion of the Mill Avenue Refresh project is underway and the entire project is scheduled to be completed before students return this fall.

Starting May 26, crews will begin road adjustments, including removing the pavers in the intersections, for milling and paving from University Drive to Rio Salado Parkway. These are the last touches to the project, which has included new electrical lines, a new irrigation system, new and wider brick sidewalks with artistic treatments, ADA updates and more than 120 new trees.

The road work will occur in three phases and during each phase, Mill Avenue and a portion of the intersecting streets off of Mill Avenue will be closed to all vehicle and bicycle traffic. Pedestrian and business access will be maintained. Work hours will vary depending on the phase and activity but some 24-hour work will be required.

Phase 1: North of University Drive to south of Fifth Street, May 26 - June 7
Phase 2: Intersection of Mill Avenue and Fifth Street to south of Third Street, June 8 - 21
Phase 3: Third Street and Mill Avenue intersection to south of Rio Salado Parkway, June 22 - July 3
