Army business systems team earns top honors from Department of War for AI innovation

WASHINGTON - A U.S. Army enterprise business systems team received top honors at the annual Department of War Chief Information Officer Awards for its integration of artificial intelligence into the service's modernization process.

Kirsten Davies, Department of War CIO, presented the award to the Army Enterprise Business Systems - Convergence Capability Development/Requirements team during a Pentagon ceremony on Feb. 23, 2025. The team modernized the Army's enterprise resource planning process using AI.

The team used large language models to accelerate the Army's planning for future business system capabilities. They reduced planning and requirements timelines by more than eighty percent. Tasks like developing objectives and key results, which previously took weeks, can now be finished in days, according to the department.

By incorporating AI, the team also reduced the number of personnel required for planning sessions by half, freeing up subject matter experts for other operational missions. Davies described the team's work an example of the "bold changes" needed in digital transformation and said it sets a new department standard. The effort is part of a broader push to create a more efficient modernization approach across the Department of War, aiming to keep the Army at the leading edge of technology.
