The Summary The Transcript

When golfers (and sisters), Madison Takai (Questrom'27) and Victoria Takai (Questrom'25) arrived at Boston University as freshmen, they knew they were in for an exciting challenge. Having grown up in Hawaii, playing golf on some of the world's most beautiful courses, they knew that as members of BU's varsity golf team, Boston would be different. The often inhospitable New England weather meant that they had to frequently confine their practice swings to a small indoor room tucked away in the Case Center.

Team members use a Trackman simulator to hone their swings, and when they're not in the golf practice room, they're working out in the gym.

The players say that what makes the team work is their support for one another.

"I think there's definitely more drive when you're competing as part of a team, because you think about all of the people that are counting on you," Victoria Takai says.

This season, the golf team, led by Christy Chen (CAS'25), placed second in the Patriot League Tournament. Earlier this week, at the BU Athletics annual Scarlet and White Ceremony, they received the Team GPA Award, given annually to the varsity program with the highest top average GPA (the golf team boasts a combined 3.67 GPA). During the same event, Chen received this year's Gretchen Schuyler Award, given annually to the top senior female scholar-athlete. A two-time Patriot League Golfer of the Year, Chen plans to play professionally with the China LPGA tour.
