Meeting with Payment Institutions and Electronic Money Institutions on the Digital Euro

On 20 March, Banca d'Italia hosted a technical workshop with Payment Institutions (PIs) and Electronic Money Institutions (EMIs) dedicated to the digital euro project. The event was attended by around 70 industry and trade association representatives, including 30 participants connecting remotely.

During the presentation, Banca d'Italia representatives from the Digital Euro Unit and the Directorate General for Financial Supervision and Regulation provided an update on the progress made by the Eurosystem and the European co-legislators. The presentation covered the Eurosystem's technical assessment for calibrating holding limits, ongoing pilot activities, and the envisaged distribution and compensation models.

The discussion with market intermediaries was lively and evidenced the strong interest in and appreciation for maintaining an open dialogue on the project. Participants shared observations on operational aspects, pilot participation, economic impacts, and the contribution that PIs and EMIs can offer to the rollout of the digital euro.

Banca d'Italia reaffirmed its willingness to continue the dialogue with market operators.
