For the second consecutive year, Mr. Trinh Anh Tuan, Chief Executive Officer of Hanoi Reinsurance Joint Stock Corporation (Hanoi Re), has been featured in the special edition of InsuranceAsia News (IAN), published on the occasion of the Singapore International Reinsurance Conference (SIRC) 2026. This provides another opportunity for Hanoi Re to share its perspectives on the reinsurance markets in Vietnam and across Asia, while reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development as the market enters a new phase of intensifying competition.

In the interview, titled "Hanoi Re pursues selective risk growth amid regional market softening," Mr. Trinh Anh Tuan shared his views on the upcoming 2027 renewals, the evolving risk landscape in Vietnam, and Hanoi Re's growth strategy across its key markets.

An interview with General Director Trịnh Anh Tuấn, featured in the special edition of InsuranceAsia News for SIRC 2026.

Underwriting Discipline in an Increasingly Competitive Market

According to Hanoi Re's CEO, the softening trend in the Asian reinsurance market is expected to continue into the 2027 renewal season. Abundant reinsurance capacity is providing insurers with greater choice while placing increasing pressure on pricing and ceding commissions.

Against this backdrop, Hanoi Re remains firmly committed to selective growth, maintaining flexibility in its solutions without compromising technical underwriting standards in pursuit of premium volume.

"We are prepared to compete for business, but not at any price, and where terms no longer support a sound underwriting decision, we will step back," Mr. Trinh Anh Tuan emphasised.

Identifying Emerging Risks in a Rapidly Developing Economy

A key focus of the interview was the rapidly evolving risk environment in Vietnam. The development of major industrial zones, infrastructure expansion, and rising asset values are generating significant demand for insurance coverage, while also increasing risk concentrations and accumulation exposures.

Drawing on the lessons learned from Typhoon Yagi in 2024, Hanoi Re's CEO highlighted the potential for accumulated losses across industrial zones, ports, and logistics hubs, as well as the indirect consequences of business interruption and supply chain disruptions.

At the same time, the expansion of data centres, battery energy storage systems, and artificial intelligence applications is introducing new challenges for risk assessment, pricing, and insurance risk management.

According to Mr. Trinh Anh Tuan, one of the key concerns is that market competition may be advancing faster than the industry's ability to fully understand and assess the underlying risks. Consequently, keeping asset valuations up to date, improving data quality, and establishing appropriate retention levels will become increasingly important to the sound and sustainable development of the market.

Expanding International Partnerships Built on Technical Expertise

Discussing Hanoi Re's strategic direction, the CEO reaffirmed that Vietnam and Southeast Asia remain the company's core markets, while China and South Korea continue to play important roles in its international business expansion strategy.

Hanoi Re prioritises partnerships built on mutual understanding, long-term cooperation, and risk portfolios aligned with the company's underwriting capabilities and risk appetite.

In its assumed reinsurance business, Hanoi Re continues to focus on its core strengths, particularly treaty reinsurance, alongside engineering and property risks within its facultative portfolio.

The company is also exploring emerging opportunities associated with technology-related risks, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and parametric insurance solutions.

Continuing to Strengthen Hanoi Re's Voice in the International Reinsurance Market

The inclusion of Hanoi Re's CEO in InsuranceAsia News' SIRC special edition for two consecutive years reflects the company's increasingly active engagement in regional industry discussions.

Through practical insights and technical perspectives, Hanoi Re continues to reaffirm its consistent business philosophy: "Underwriting Discipline - Flexible Solutions," with quality of growth, robust risk management, and sustainable partnerships serving as the foundations of its long-term strategy.
