ROHTO Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka City, President: Hidetoshi Segi)'s "Phytoexosome" technology, which it has been researching and developing, has been ranked among the top 30 "2027 Hit Predictions" by Nikkei Trendy magazine and was featured as one of the "Cell Tech Cosmetics" that won the Industry-Specific Grand Prize (Beauty). The attention given to this new trend of "Cell Tech Cosmetics" suggests that in future skincare, not only the ingredients themselves, but also the perspective of "cell function" that supports healthy skin, and the perspective of scientific reliability, may become new value criteria for selecting products. The "Phytoexosome" technology will be gradually incorporated into Rohto's main skincare brands in the future.
In addition to the cell science we have cultivated in the medical field, we have also been exploring the power of plants, microorganisms, and algae, including extracts and herbal medicines, for many years. Connecting the knowledge from these different research areas, we established the "Phytoscience Institute" in 2025. As a core technology of this institute, we have been advancing research on "phytoexosomes," which focus on extracellular vesicles derived from plants, microorganisms, and algae.
Plants possess diverse components and mechanisms for intercellular communication in order to survive in harsh natural environments. Our company explores this vitality and potential of plants from the perspectives of dermatology and cell research. We are discovering the potential of materials and technologies, including extracellular vesicles derived from plants, and are advancing their application in the fields of beauty and health.
Furthermore, we have established the "Phytoexosome Research Group" to share scientific knowledge and challenges with experts, and we are holding discussions on the definition and evaluation methods of materials, safety and stability, and appropriate technical representation. Amidst growing expectations for new technologies, we value carefully communicating both what is scientifically known and what needs to be verified in the future.
Through this accumulation of research and information dissemination, we aim to create a future where new technologies are understood and evaluated based on scientific evidence, enabling customers to choose skincare products that are right for them.
