Winter curbside collection tips

To ensure your curbside materials are collected safely and efficiently throughout the winter season, follow these tips:

  • Place carts or containers on a solid surface for pickup, such as the end of your driveway or the edge of the right-of-way. Do not place carts on a snowbank or in the street - this is a safety issue for you, for our staff, and for other vehicles.
  • Have carts at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day for pickup.
  • Do not overfill carts. City ordinance states the lids must be closed. This helps control litter in your neighborhood.
  • Keep at least a 3-foot clear zone around each cart to allow the truck's mechanical arm to lift curbside carts safely.
  • Keep recycling materials loose-no plastic bags! Also, no glass or Styrofoam. For more information on recycling curbside collection, visit the Curbside Collection web page.
  • All garbage must be bagged. This also helps control litter in your neighborhood. For more information on garbage curbside collection, visit the Curbside Collection web page.

Curbside composting collection information

The City reminds residents that curbside composting collection for yard waste and food waste will continue throughout the winter season with no suspension in service.

Yard waste can be placed in your yellow-top composting cart. Paper yard waste bags (any brand allowed; weight limit of 50 pounds) or bundles with a $2 City yard waste sticker attached per bag or bundle are allowed at the curb. Stickers are available at the City Hall Revenue Office and participating retailers, including both Iowa City Ace Hardware locations and the Hy-Vee stores in Iowa City and Coralville. For more information on composting curbside collection, visit the Curbside Collection web page.

To request a 25-gallon or 95-gallon yellow-top composting cart, fill out the request form.
