The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that roadway reconstruction will be performed on I-84 in Newtown. This project started on Monday, March 16, 2026, and should be completed in October 2027. The project 0096-0208 consists of extending the truck climbing lane on I-84 eastbound, constructing a new Exit 9 on-ramp acceleration lane, median fill work, and drainage improvements.
CTDOT Project No. 0096-0208 was awarded to Richards Corporation at a cost of $8,138,061.00 on January 9, 2026, and is scheduled to be completed October 2027. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 4 in Thomaston.
LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO
There will be intermittent nightly lane closures on I-84 in Newtown starting Monday, April 6, 2026, through October 2027. Nightly lane closures will be implemented between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Once temporary traffic barrier is installed, the Contractor will be performing day work behind barrier. The existing travel lanes will be shifted as needed, but two lanes of travel will remain for the duration of the project. Pre-warning vehicles, arrow boards, and traffic drums will be utilized for lane closures during this time.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
