Rep. Gabe Vasquez Leads Bipartisan Effort to Ban Stock Trading in Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) reaffirmed his commitment to public service and transparency by co-sponsoring the bipartisan Restore Trust in Congress Act, a bill to ban members of Congress from profiting from their positions of power by owning or trading stocks.

"Members of Congress should serve the people, not their own stock portfolios," said Vasquez. "I didn't come to Congress to get rich, and I don't think anyone should. This legislation is about restoring trust in our institutions and ensuring that lawmakers remain focused on the job they are entrusted to do."

Numerous bills to ban stock trading in Congress have been proposed this year, but this act goes further than most, prohibiting Members of Congress, their spouses, and dependents from both trading and owning individual stocks.

The Restore Trust in Congress Actbuilds on Rep. Vasquez's strong record of fighting for transparency and accountability in Washington D.C. Earlier this year, he championed the TRUST in Congress Act,a bipartisan measure to increase public confidence in government by holding members of Congress to higher ethical standards and forcing them to place specified investments into a qualified blind trust. Together, these efforts reflect his commitment to restoring integrity in public service and ensuring elected officials put the people they serve ahead of personal gain.
