The Fubon Senior Open, the most time-honored international senior golf tournament in Taiwan, is leveling up again in terms of scale, offering a purse of NT$6.8 million (NT$6 million for regular seniors and NT$800,000 for super seniors) this year, up from NT$6 million on offer in 2024. Senior golfers from 13 countries are set to gather at the Taiwan Golf & Country Club (TGCC) -- the birthplace of golf in Taiwan -- on Oct. 29 to vie for the top honor of this flagship tournament on the calendar of the Taiwan Senior Golf Tour. According to the organizers, the tournament will carry on the tradition of being "not only about seniors, but also about heritage", as the Youth Heritage Camp, slated for Oct. 27, will see tournament co-founder Tony Hsieh lead a group of senior veterans to show young amateurs the ropes.
As the annual flagship event for the Taiwan Senior Professional Golf Association (TSPGA), the Fubon Senior Open has stayed true to the belief of being "not only about seniors, but also about heritage" for the past 23 years. As part of the tradition, the organizers will host the highly acclaimed Youth Heritage Camp on Oct. 27, where Taiwan's golfing legend Tony Hsieh, along with 2024 Fubon Senior Open champion Thammanoon Sriroj of Thailand, local veterans Lu Wen-Teh (1963) and Lu Chien-soon, as well as 2020 Tokyo Olympics men's golf bronze medalist C. T. Pan, will sit down and share their invaluable experiences with young amateurs. Earlier on the morning of the same day, they will also play together so that young players can learn from battle-hardened veterans at close range.
Fubon Group chairman Daniel M. Tsai said he is grateful for the devotion and persistence of many people who have helped bring about the Fubon Senior Open over the years. Tsai is particularly thankful for Tony Hsieh because the Fubon Senior Open would not be possible without his long-standing efforts to promote golf and carry the baton in Taiwan. Hsieh has tirelessly led the Fubon Golf Heritage Camp for 17 years, and will continue to lead a team of veterans to pass down their professionalism and manners to help a new generation of golfers lay the foundation for fine skills and character. Through the Fubon Senior Open, Tsai hopes that more people will see how mature skills, steady mentality, and respectful demeanor can open new possibilities in a new era.
Tony Hsieh, who has developed a close bond with Tsai due to their mutual love of golf, said that the training and nurturing of junior golfers is instrumental in building a robust foundation for golf development in Taiwan, which is why he has been so dedicated to hosting invitational events focusing on youth development and why he has served as the head coach of multiple national golf teams over the years. Hsieh firmly believes that "chicks may struggle to grow and become full-fledged without the mentorship of old roosters". He is also confident that he and his fellow senior golfers, armed with golfing wisdom and experiences accumulated over the course of several decades, will be able to help promising young golfers break things open and avoid taking unnecessary detours.
According to the TSPGA, this year's tournament features a star-studded cast, as senior professional golfers from a total of 13 countries are set to join the fray, including Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, the USA, China, the UK, India and Australia.
All the top 30 players from TSPGA's 2024 order of merit have entered the event, including 2024 money list leader Lu Chien-soon, as well as Lin chi-hsiang, multiple Fubon Senior Open winner Lu Wen-teh (1963), T. C. Chen and Hsu Mong-nan. Hsieh Chin-sheng, who grew up near the TGCC, and 2024 Fubon Senior Open second runner-up Lien Lu-sen are also billed as marquee players of the field.
Furthermore, Tsai Chi-huang, who walked away with the 2022 Fubon Senior Open championship trophy as a dark horse, local veterans Wang Ter-chang, Chung Chun-hsing, Yeh Chang-ting and 2000 Malaysian Open winner Yeh Wei-tze are also set to compete.
Thammanoon Sriroj, who cruised to a six-shot blow-out victory last year at this tournament, leads the equally impressive side of international players, which also features his compatriot Prayad Marksaeng, who finished in the second place last year. Other prominent international players include Takashi Kanemoto, currently ranked 36th on the Japan Senior Tour, and 2014 Fubon Senior Open winner Kim Jong-duck from Korea.
It is worth mentioning that both Sriroj and Marksaeng are in-form and have made their presence felt in Japan this year, making them the players to beat. Aside from triumphing at the Nojima Champion Cup in April in Japan, Marksaeng also finished tied for the second place twice on the Japan Senior Tour this year. He currently sits at the fourth place in the order of merit. Defending champion Sriroj is just as impressive, having just won the 35th Japan Senior Open in late September, which catapulted his order of merit ranking to No. 3.
The invited junior amateur players this year include Hsieh Ping-hua, who became the first Taiwanese to make the final 64 in the past three years at the 2025 U.S. Girls' Junior Championship, 2025 Sun Flower Youth Cup Boys' Group B winner Wang Yu-chun, 2025 Taiwan Junior Golf Championship Boys' Group A winner Kuo Shih-chi, and 2025 Yeangder National Amateur Open Men's Group B champion Cho Yu-te, who is just 16 years old.
The 2025 Fubon Senior Open is set to warm thing up with a pro-am tournament on Oct. 28, followed by three rounds of regular senior and two rounds of super senior competitions. The top 60 (including tie) players out of a field of 96 regular seniors at the conclusion of the first two rounds will advance to the final round. There will be no cut, however, for the super senior (players aged 65 or older) competition, which features 28 players including Tony Hsieh and defending champion Chung Chun-hsing. With a purse of NT$6.8 million, the Fubon Senior Open is the senior golf tournament offering the highest prize money in Taiwan. Admission is free of charge, and fans are welcome to come to the TGCC to cheer for their favorite players.
