Washington, D.C. - Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement on the announcement that Israel and Hamas agreed to a deal to end the war:
"I am grateful for the announcement of a deal between Israel and Hamas to release the hostages and pause the fighting in Gaza.
"Tonight, the hostages' families will go to sleep with the knowledge that they will soon be reunited with their loved ones for the first time in two years.
"Tonight, Palestinian parents in Gaza will hug their children with rekindled hope that they may soon be able to begin rebuilding their homes and lives, finally free of the ravages of this war.
"Both sides must implement this arrangement without delay. Equally vital, the United States - working with our regional partners - must ensure that this latest ceasefire leads to a durable end to the war and the human suffering in Gaza, and not a return to fighting, as occurred in March.
"Despite all the reasons for pessimism, I continue to believe that a two-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in dignity, peace, and security, is necessary for lasting peace in the region. Principled, sustained American leadership is required to move beyond the tragedy of the last two years and achieve this more peaceful future."
