The Palette Program has launched a special mural project at 1000 Lowden St. on the city's Southside, with students and teachers from I.M. Terrell Academy as the masterminds behind this new artwork.
The project has been in development for the past six months, gathering ideas, community input and artistic renderings to ensure it reflects the shared vision of the school and the surrounding neighborhood.
The theme of the mural is "Hands of Unity," symbolizing connection, collaboration and the power of community. To bring this vision to life, residents were invited to submit photos of their hands holding meaningful objects, which are being incorporated into the mural design.
The location holds special significance, as the wall was originally painted more than 10 years ago by local artist Jo DuFo. The new project honors that legacy by revitalizing the space with fresh artwork and renewed purpose, led by students, teachers and community volunteers.
"We officially broke ground on Oct. 16, with the help of Park Operations supervisors and district superintendents, who painted over the previous mural to prepare a clean foundation for the new artwork,"" said Park & Recreation Department Program Coordinator Margo Gordon. "The students have amazing talent, and I am happy that our program has the platform to display it."
The Palette Program is an extension of the City's Graffiti Abatement Program, developed to expand beyond graffiti removal and focus on community-based art initiatives that inspire collaboration and creativity.
Through this initiative, the Palette Program continues its mission to foster creativity, community engagement and sustainable art across Fort Worth. All materials and supplies are funded by the program, with City staff and artists assisting onsite throughout each painting session.
The mural will be worked on over the next month, so keep an eye out for updates as this collaborative project comes to life.
