Best Weekend Ever: TLU Starts December with Celebrations

The first weekend in December was a monumental one on the TLU campus, with a range of wonderful celebrations.

This year's Christmas Vespers services brought the community together for an annual tradition that awakens the Christmas spirit with such beauty, reminding those who attend of the sacredness of the season. Special thanks to Dr. Douglas Boyer, director of the TLU School of Music and the TLU choirs, and Dr. Brett Richardson, director of bands, as well as faculty members Dr. Eric Siu (violin), Dr. Elizabeth Lee (cello), Juliana Post (violin), pianists Dr. SungEun Park and Cristina Castro, and San Antonio actress Sam Carter Gilliam. A huge round of applause for the TLU Choir, TLU Treble Choir, the Kantorei Chamber Choir, and the TLU band.

On Friday evening, TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell and her husband Alan hosted a dinner to thank President's Associates ahead of the evening Vespers performance. President's Associates are those who generously give $1500 or more to TLU each year.

Saturday, December 6, brought the dedication and ribbon cutting of the brand-new Verne Lundquist Student Athletic Center. Highlights of the day included remarks from Dr. Cottrell, Campus Pastor Rev. Wes Cain, Director of Athletics Bill Miller, Board of Regents Chair Mike Washington '77, women's soccer team member and TLU senior Jessica Robinson, Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen, and of course, Verne Lundquist himself. A short ceremony was followed by tours of the beautiful new center which will serve Bulldog student-athletes for generations to come.

The nearly 10,000 square foot building, designed by Pfluger Architects of San Antonio and constructed by The Koehler Company of Seguin, houses a conditioning and weight room as well as locker rooms for the women's soccer and softball teams and a visitor center featuring the sports memorabilia collection of beloved sportscaster Lundquist.

The celebration came full circle on Saturday night, with a special Front Row event held on campus, featuring Verne Lundquist in conversation with Brad Sham, the iconic voice of the Dallas Cowboys. The Front Row events celebrate and support TLU Athletics, benefiting the university's 19 NCAA Division III sports.
