City of Sparks to Utilize Goat Grazing to Reduce Vegetation

SPARKS, Nev. -
The City of Sparks is partnering with High Desert Graziers to use goat grazing as an environmentally friendly hazard mitigation approach to reduce vegetation, limit herbicides and pesticides, and implement sustainable, cost-effective land management practices.

Spanish goats from the Smith Valley-based company will graze at eight key locations throughout the city, including Kyley Ranch, Stonebrook, the future Sparks City Hall site, and areas near the Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility.

"Targeted grazing is a thoughtful and sustainable way to care for our parks and open spaces," said Nancy O'Connor, Parks and Recreation director. "It supports environmental health while reducing wildfire risk and long-term maintenance impacts."

The pilot program supports the city's goal of reducing herbicide and pesticide use, particularly in the storm drain system. Staff will evaluate whether goat grazing provides a more effective long-term option for vegetation management while minimizing environmental impacts. Compared with traditional methods, goat grazing reduces soil disturbance, dust, noise, and emissions.

"Spanish goats are uniquely suited for this type of work," said Denton Cook, co-owner of High Desert Graziers. "They can reach areas that are difficult for equipment, handle varied terrain, and eat a wide range of vegetation. The goats will target dry brush, invasive plants such as cheatgrass, and other vegetation."

Residents and visitors in grazing areas are asked to:

  • Keep dogs leashed or at home.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the goats.
  • Avoid loud noises.
  • Watch for temporary electric fencing.

Grazing is expected to begin the first week of May and continue for several weeks.
