(Washington, D.C.) It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of former Archbishop Michael J. Byrnes. His firm commitment to faith, service, and leadership left a lasting impact on the Catholic community in Guam and beyond. Through his ministry, he touched countless lives, offering strength, hope, and compassion to all who sought his guidance.
Archbishop Byrnes will be remembered not only for his extraordinary leadership but also for his ability to meet people where they were, both in moments of celebration and in times of hardship. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he provided steady spiritual support, adapting the Church's ministry to continue reaching the faithful during a time of global crisis. This compassion and resilience will remain a defining part of his legacy.
As we reflect on his life and contributions, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, the Catholic faithful in Guam and his hometown of Detroit, and to all those who were touched by his ministry. May his spirit of kindness and quiet strength continue to inspire those who carry on his work.
