Improvements to U.S. Route 54 and U.S. Route 63 in Jefferson City to start next week

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A project aimed at enhancing safety, easing congestion, and improving traffic flow is set to begin next week on U.S. Route 54 in north Jefferson City. Motorists can expect narrowed lanes, changing traffic patterns, lane and ramp closures, and reduced speeds throughout construction.

Starting Monday, June 1, construction crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation will begin widening westbound U.S. Route 54 from U.S. Route 63 to the Missouri River Bridge. During the initial phase, a temporary barrier wall will be installed along the median, resulting in narrowed lanes and speeds reduced to 55 mph. Setting the temporary barriers will require the passing (left) lane to close for several nights, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Throughout construction, which is expected to be completed by May 1, 2027, motorists can expect changing traffic patterns that include narrowed lanes, ramp closures, and lane shifts and closures. The ramp from U.S. Route 63 onto westbound U.S. Route 54 will remain open and, for most of the work, two lanes of westbound U.S. Route 54 will remain open during daytime hours.

Improvements that are included in this project:

  • Providing southbound U.S. Route 63 with a dedicated lane onto the Missouri River bridge, eliminating the need to immediately merge with westbound U.S. Route 54.
  • Reconfiguring the ramp from Callaway County Route W (Airport Road) to westbound U.S. Route 54.
  • Resurfacing the pavement on westbound U.S. Route 54 approaching the Missouri River bridge.

All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
