OSCE Chairman-in-Office addressed the Parliamentary Assembly Annual Session
THE HAGUE, 4 July 2026 - OSCE Chairman-in-Office and Swiss Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis presented Switzerland's priorities and guiding principles for its OSCE 2026 Chairpersonship to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly at the opening ceremony of its 33rd Annual Session in the The Hague, Netherlands.
Held under the theme "International Law and Shared Principles: Foundations for Security and Co-operation in the OSCE Area", the Annual Session brings together parliamentarians from across the OSCE region to discuss current security challenges and strengthen political dialogue.
In his opening remarks, the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs stressed that respect for the principles of the Helsinki Final Act and meaningful dialogue remain essential for addressing today's complex security environment. He underlined the important contribution of parliamentary diplomacy, particularly at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and mistrust toward organizations and institutions.
"Parliamentarians play a vital role in preserving dialogue across political divides," stated Chairman-in-Office Cassis. "In the face of growing political tensions, where mistrust of institutions and political decision-makers is on the rise, the work of members of parliament is of crucial importance as a direct link to the people."
The Chairman-in-Office also highlighted Switzerland's commitment to reinforcing the Organization as an inclusive platform for dialogue, rebuilding confidence among participating States and enhancing the OSCE's ability to act and deliver on its mandate.
On the margins of the Annual Session, Chairman-in-Office Cassis met with the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, Secretary General Roberto Montella, and members of the Swiss parliamentary delegation, led by Councillor of States, Thierry Burkart.
